The Stonegarden Mr Randall Fortified Muscat Field Blend No. 1 is a truly unique fortified wine from a remarkable 1858-planted vineyard in Eden Valley. Crafted by Ben Radford, the wine is made from White Frontignac (Muscat) co-planted with 12 other grape varieties, all harvested and fermented together as a traditional field blend. Fortified and matured for over a decade in seasoned bourbon barrels, it is a rare interpretation of Australian fortified wine that combines old-vine character, freshness and remarkable complexity.
The nose reveals caramelised orange peel, dried apricot and vanilla bean alongside toasted almond, honey and lifted floral Muscat aromatics. The palate is rich and beautifully textured, with layers of toffee, marmalade and dried fruit balanced by vibrant natural acidity preserved by the cool Eden Valley climate. Complex yet remarkably fresh, it finishes long and elegant with warming spice, roasted nuts and lingering citrus complexity.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A fascinating fortified that combines the richness of traditional Australian styles with the freshness and perfume of Eden Valley fruit. Enjoy lightly chilled as an after-dinner wine or pair with crème brûlée, orange and almond cake, roasted nuts, blue cheese or simply savour it on its own. Drinking beautifully now, it will continue to evolve gracefully for many years after opening when stored correctly.
