SWEET WINE
Sweet wine refers to wines that retain a noticeable level of residual sugar, giving them a rich, luscious and often dessert-like character. These wines range from lightly sweet to intensely concentrated styles and are produced in many of the world’s leading wine regions.
Sweet wines can be made using several techniques, including late harvest grapes, noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), drying grapes (passito), or freezing grapes (ice wine). These methods concentrate sugars and flavours, resulting in wines with remarkable intensity and complexity.
Famous sweet wine styles include Sauternes (France), Tokaji (Hungary), Ice Wine (Canada/Germany) and Moscato d’Asti (Italy). These wines often display flavours of honey, apricot, peach, tropical fruit, citrus and caramel, balanced by acidity that prevents them from becoming overly heavy.
Sweet wines can vary in body and alcohol, from light and refreshing styles like Moscato to rich, full-bodied dessert wines such as Sauternes.
