MARTINBOROUGH

Martinborough is one of New Zealand’s most respected wine regions, located in the Wairarapa area at the southern tip of the North Island. Although relatively small in size, the region has built a strong international reputation for producing elegant and complex wines, particularly Pinot Noir.

The vineyards of Martinborough are largely planted on the Martinborough Terrace, an ancient riverbed formed by the Ruamahanga River. The soils are mainly gravelly and free-draining, which naturally limits vine vigor and helps produce concentrated, high-quality grapes.

Martinborough has a cool, dry climate with long sunshine hours and strong winds that reduce disease pressure in the vineyards. The region also experiences significant day–night temperature variation, allowing grapes to ripen slowly while retaining freshness and natural acidity.

Pinot Noir is the region’s flagship variety. Compared with Central Otago, Martinborough Pinot Noir is often more structured, savoury, and Burgundian in style, showing flavours of dark cherry, plum, earth, spice, and subtle herbal notes. The wines are known for their elegance, depth, and ageing potential.

In addition to Pinot Noir, Martinborough also produces excellent Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Riesling, all of which benefit from the region’s cool climate and distinctive terroir.

Despite its modest size, Martinborough has played a significant role in establishing New Zealand’s reputation for premium Pinot Noir, and today it remains one of the country’s most highly regarded boutique wine regions.
