Founded by Clive Paton in 1980, Ata Rangi has played a pivotal role in establishing Martinborough as one of the world's premier Pinot Noir regions. The 2024 vintage benefited from an excellent growing season, allowing the fruit to achieve outstanding ripeness while preserving the freshness and precision that define Ata Rangi. The wine is produced primarily from Pinot Noir, with fruit sourced from mature estate vineyards, many planted in the early 1980s. Traditional fermentation with a proportion of whole bunches and maturation in French oak barrels create a wine of complexity, elegance and exceptional balance.
The bouquet is intensely fragrant and beautifully layered, opening with aromas of wild cherry, raspberry and red plum, followed by violet, rose petal and crushed cranberry. As it opens in the glass, more complex notes of forest floor, dried herbs, cinnamon, clove and subtle smoky spice emerge, together with hints of black tea and fine mineral nuances. The aromatic profile is immediately recognisable as Ata Rangi: pure, vibrant and remarkably detailed.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied, silky and exceptionally poised. Bright red cherry, wild strawberry and cranberry fruit are framed by fine, chalky tannins and vibrant natural acidity. The texture is supple yet structured, with layers of savoury spice, subtle earthiness and mineral tension adding depth through the mid-palate. The finish is long, graceful and persistent, lingering with red berries, dried flowers, spice and delicate forest-floor complexity.
