ATA RANGI
Ata Rangi is one of New Zealand’s most celebrated wineries, located in the renowned Martinborough wine region on the southern tip of the North Island. Founded in 1980 by Clive Paton, Ata Rangi quickly gained international recognition for producing some of the country’s finest Pinot Noir, helping establish Martinborough as one of the world’s great cool-climate Pinot Noir regions.
The name Ata Rangi means “dawn sky” or “new beginning” in Māori, reflecting the winery’s pioneering role in the development of Martinborough’s wine industry. The vineyards are planted on ancient alluvial gravel soils, which provide excellent drainage and contribute to the concentration and structure of the wines.
Ata Rangi is best known for its world-class Pinot Noir, which typically shows aromas of red cherry, plum, and wild berries, supported by elegant tannins, savoury complexity, and excellent ageing potential. In addition to Pinot Noir, the estate also produces highly regarded Chardonnay, Crimson Pinot Noir, and Riesling.
Today, Ata Rangi remains a family-owned winery and is widely considered one of the benchmark producers of New Zealand Pinot Noir, consistently crafting wines that combine elegance, purity, and a true sense of Martinborough terroir.
