GAJA

Gaja is one of Italy’s most iconic and influential wine producers, founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja in the village of Barbaresco, Piedmont. Originally a small tavern operation, the Gaja family’s commitment to quality quickly elevated the estate’s reputation. Today, it is managed by the fifth generation—Gaia, Rossana, and Giovanni—under the legacy of Angelo Gaja, who transformed the winery into an international benchmark for Italian fine wine.

Angelo Gaja joined the family business in 1961 and revolutionized winemaking in Piedmont by introducing modern techniques such as green harvesting, temperature-controlled fermentation, and aging in French barriques. He also boldly introduced international grape varieties—Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc—into a region steeped in tradition, challenging conventional boundaries. His introduction of single-vineyard labels such as Sorì Tildìn, Costa Russi, and Sorì San Lorenzo further cemented the estate’s commitment to terroir-driven excellence.

Gaja’s flagship wine remains the Barbaresco DOCG, crafted exclusively from Nebbiolo and sourced from around 14 crus in Barbaresco and Treiso. In addition to Barbaresco, Gaja produces exceptional Barolo from the Sperss vineyard, and operates esteemed estates in Tuscany—Ca’Marcanda in Bolgheri and Pieve Santa Restituta in Montalcino—where they produce Super Tuscans and Brunello di Montalcino. The portfolio also includes celebrated whites like Gaia & Rey Chardonnay, made from estate-grown fruit in Piedmont.

Gaja wines are celebrated for their elegance, complexity, and remarkable aging potential. The estate has played a central role in elevating the reputation of Barbaresco to rival that of Barolo, and Angelo Gaja himself is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern wine. Today, the Gaja brand stands as a global symbol of Italian viticultural excellence, offering wines that are both deeply rooted in their terroir and visionary in their approach.
