CATENA ZAPATA

Bodega Catena Zapata, established in 1902 by Italian immigrant Nicola Catena in Mendoza, Argentina, is a family-owned winery renowned for its pivotal role in revitalizing Malbec and pioneering high-altitude viticulture in the Andean foothills.

In the 1980s, Nicolás Catena Zapata, representing the third generation of the Catena family, introduced European winemaking techniques to Argentina. He focused on planting vineyards at higher elevations to enhance grape quality, leading to the establishment of the Adrianna Vineyard at nearly 5,000 feet, often referred to as the “Grand Cru” of South America.

Today, Dr. Laura Catena, a Harvard and Stanford-educated biologist and physician, serves as the managing director of the winery. Under her leadership, Catena Zapata continues to produce a diverse portfolio of wines, including Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay. Their signature wine, Nicolás Catena Zapata, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, has been recognized in blind tastings alongside esteemed labels such as Château Latour and Opus One.

The winery’s commitment to quality and innovation has earned it numerous accolades, including being named the “World’s Most Admired Wine Brand” by Drinks International in 2020.
