Named in honour of Angélica Zapata, the mother of Nicolás Catena Zapata, this wine represents the family's relentless pursuit of excellence and their pioneering work in elevating Argentine Malbec onto the world stage. Sourced from high-altitude vineyards in the Uco Valley, particularly the renowned Angélica Sur Vineyard, the wine benefits from intense mountain sunlight, cool nights and rocky, well-drained soils that produce fruit of exceptional concentration, freshness and elegance. Matured for 18 months in French oak, 50% of which is new, the 2021 vintage showcases remarkable purity, structure and refinement. James Suckling awarded the wine 95 points, highlighting its balance, freshness and finely detailed tannins.
The nose is deeply perfumed and beautifully complex, opening with aromas of blackberry, blueberry and ripe black cherry layered with fragrant violet, lavender and crushed rose petals. As the wine unfolds, notes of dark chocolate, cocoa nib, graphite and cedar emerge, complemented by subtle hints of liquorice, fresh mint, sweet spice and fine tobacco. The influence of the high-altitude vineyards provides exceptional aromatic lift, while the French oak adds beautifully integrated notes of vanilla and toasted spice without overwhelming the purity of the fruit. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet remarkably poised, with silky, fine-grained tannins and vibrant natural acidity providing exceptional balance. Layers of blackcurrant, blackberry, blueberry and dark plum flow effortlessly across the palate, supported by nuances of dark chocolate, espresso, cedar and crushed stone. Despite its concentration, the wine maintains remarkable freshness thanks to the cool climate of Mendoza's elevated vineyards. The tannins are polished and velvety, carrying the wine towards a long, persistent finish marked by lingering dark fruit, cocoa, mineral notes and subtle floral perfume. The style is powerful without heaviness, combining richness with precision in a way that has made Catena Zapata one of Argentina's benchmark producers.
