MARGARET RIVER
Margaret River is one of Australia’s most prestigious wine regions, internationally renowned for producing world-class Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Located about three hours south of Perth, the region sits between the Indian Ocean and the Southern Ocean, benefiting from a strong maritime climate that moderates temperatures and allows grapes to ripen slowly while retaining natural acidity.
Although Margaret River accounts for only a small percentage of Australia’s total wine production, it produces a disproportionate number of the country’s premium and collectible wines. The region gained global recognition in the 1970s after research identified its climate as remarkably similar to that of Bordeaux, making it particularly well suited to Cabernet-based blends.
Margaret River’s gravelly loam soils and consistent growing conditions allow producers to craft wines with exceptional balance, structure and longevity. Cabernet Sauvignon from the region typically shows blackcurrant, cassis and fine tannins, while Chardonnay is known for its citrus, stone fruit and mineral complexity, often with impressive ageing potential.
Today Margaret River is home to some of Australia’s most celebrated wineries, including Cullen Wines, Leeuwin Estate, and Vasse Felix. Despite its relatively small size, the region consistently produces wines that rank among the finest in the Southern Hemisphere.
Margaret River wines are prized by collectors and everyday drinkers alike for their elegance, purity and remarkable ability to age, making the region one of Australia’s most important sources of premium Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
