Stonegarden Wines is one of Australia's most exciting boutique wineries, dedicated to preserving and showcasing one of the oldest vineyard sites in the Barossa. Located in the rolling hills of Eden Valley, the historic Stonegarden vineyard was first planted in 1858 and is home to remarkable old vines that continue to produce wines of exceptional character and authenticity.
The winery is led by acclaimed winemaker Ben Radford, formerly the longtime chief winemaker at Rockford Wines. Having worked with fruit from the Stonegarden vineyard for many years, Radford partnered with owner Glen Monaghan to establish the Stonegarden label, with the goal of expressing the unique personality of this historic site through small-production, terroir-driven wines.
Situated in the southeastern corner of Eden Valley, the vineyard benefits from elevated altitude, cool nights, low rainfall, and thin loam soils over red clay, micaceous schist, and quartz. These conditions naturally produce low yields, thick-skinned berries, and wines with remarkable aromatic intensity, freshness, and mineral character. The vineyard has been farmed organically in recent years, with an emphasis on biodiversity and minimal intervention.
Stonegarden produces a focused range of wines including Riesling, Grenache, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and limited field blends. The old-vine Grenache has become a flagship of the estate, offering aromas of raspberry, rose petal, spice, and wild herbs, while the Shiraz combines dark berry fruit, pepper, floral notes, and refined tannins. The Cabernet Sauvignon delivers classic blackcurrant, cedar, violets, and mineral complexity, reflecting the distinctive character of Eden Valley.
The philosophy at Stonegarden is centred on allowing the ancient vineyard to speak for itself. Hand harvesting, careful fruit selection, gentle extraction, and restrained oak maturation ensure each wine faithfully expresses its remarkable site. Production remains extremely limited, making the wines highly sought after by collectors and lovers of classic Barossa and Eden Valley wines.
