2023 Bondar Rayner Vineyard Shiraz
- Description
- Info
The 2023 Bondar Rayner Vineyard Shiraz is the flagship Shiraz from Andre and Selina Bondar, sourced exclusively from the oldest blocks of the organically managed Rayner Vineyard in Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale. Drawn from vines planted in 1950 and 1960 across deep sandy soils with ironstone and shallow clay over limestone, the wine represents the most serious and cellar-worthy expression in the Bondar Shiraz range. Crafted with around 90% whole bunch fermentation and extended maturation in seasoned French oak and large-format foudre, it balances old-vine concentration with remarkable perfume and finesse. The nose is deeply aromatic and layered, revealing blackberry, boysenberry and black cherry alongside violet, cracked pepper and exotic spice. There are complex savoury notes of kelp, ironstone, master stock and subtle tarry earthiness, with the whole-bunch component adding floral lift and herbal freshness. The perfume is intense yet finely detailed, sitting beautifully above the wine’s darker fruit core.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with silky, fine-grained tannins and vibrant natural acidity that gives the wine both power and energy. The fruit profile balances dark berries and plum with savoury spice, mineral nuance and saline tension, creating a wine that feels concentrated yet remarkably composed. Compared to the more approachable Violet Hour, the Rayner Vineyard carries greater depth, structure and length, with old-vine intensity framed by freshness and precision rather than heaviness. The finish is long, savoury and persistent, highlighting both elegance and serious ageing potential.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is one of the benchmark modern McLaren Vale Shiraz wines — combining old-vine concentration with a Rhône-inspired sense of restraint and perfume. Compared to richer, more overtly powerful Shiraz styles, the Rayner Vineyard offers far greater freshness, mineral detail and structural finesse while still delivering serious depth. The cool 2023 season has produced an especially balanced and complete release, with excellent tension between fruit intensity and savoury complexity. Already highly impressive with air, but this is clearly built for long-term ageing. Enjoy now with decanting or cellar through 2038+ as it develops further earthy, floral and tertiary complexity. Exceptional with lamb, venison, chargrilled beef or slow-cooked savoury dishes.
