The 2025 Bannockburn Gamay is one of Australia's finest examples of the variety, produced from a tiny 1.4-acre block at the iconic Bannockburn Vineyard in Geelong. Originally planted in 2014 and grafted to Gamay in 2019, the vineyard sits on north-facing clay over limestone soils, delivering a wine with far greater depth and structure than many lighter, carbonic-style Australian Gamays.
Made using 100% whole-bunch carbonic maceration before finishing fermentation in large-format old oak and maturing for 10 months, the wine combines vibrant fruit with impressive complexity. Aromas of black cherry, blackberry, bramble and blood orange are layered with spice, bitter herbs and a subtle amaro-like edge.
The palate is juicy, energetic and beautifully balanced, showing dark cherry and berry fruits framed by lively acidity, savoury herbal notes and fine, gently gripping tannins. Unlike many simple, fruit-forward Gamays, Bannockburn delivers genuine structure and mineral depth while remaining fresh and highly drinkable. The finish is long, savoury and persistent with spice and herbal complexity.
Critics have been highly enthusiastic, with Philip Rich awarding 95 points and Campbell Mattinson 94 points, both praising the wine's concentration, balance, freshness and ageing potential.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is one of the benchmark Australian Gamays. Compared to Beaujolais Villages, it offers greater structure and savoury complexity; compared to Cru Beaujolais, it combines similar energy with a distinctly Geelong mineral character. The 2025 vintage is exceptionally impressive, delivering concentration, freshness and remarkable drinkability in equal measure. Enjoy now with a light chill or cellar for 5–8+ years. Perfect with charcuterie, roast chicken, duck, pork dishes and modern Australian cuisine.
