The 2023 San Salvatore 1988 Porconero Aglianico IGP is a vibrant and approachable red wine from Campania in southern Italy, produced from the region’s native Aglianico grape. Part of San Salvatore 1988’s Porconero range, it offers a fresher and more immediately drinkable interpretation of a variety often associated with powerful, long-lived wines. The wine opens with aromas of ripe cherry, blackberry and wild berries, layered with violet, Mediterranean herbs and subtle notes of black pepper and spice. San Salvatore’s Porconero range includes a varietal Aglianico alongside its Fiano and Falanghina wines.

On the palate, it is medium-bodied, juicy and savoury, with generous red and dark fruit supported by fresh acidity and well-balanced tannins. Notes of blackberry, cherry and plum are complemented by floral nuances, peppery spice and a subtle earthy character. The emphasis is on freshness and purity of fruit, creating an Aglianico that retains the grape’s distinctive southern Italian personality while remaining approachable and versatile at the table.

Ben's Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is an excellent choice for anyone wanting to discover Aglianico without the heavier structure and extended ageing often associated with the variety. Porconero offers plenty of southern Italian character while remaining fresh, juicy and easy to enjoy. Drink now or over the next 3–5 years. Pair with wood-fired pizza, pasta with rich tomato sauce, grilled sausages, pork, lamb skewers or a classic Italian antipasto platter.
