2023 Domaine Marc Sorrel Hermitage Blanc Les Rocoules
- Description
- Info
The 2023 Domaine Marc Sorrel Hermitage Blanc Les Rocoules is one of the Northern Rhône’s most extraordinary white wines, produced in tiny quantities from the historic Les Rocoules lieu-dit on the eastern side of the Hermitage hill. Crafted from approximately 90% Marsanne and 10% Roussanne, with vines originally planted by the Sorrel family in the 1920s, this flagship white is widely regarded as one of the greatest expressions of white Hermitage. Domaine Marc Sorrel remains one of the region’s most traditional and highly sought-after producers, and the exceptional 2023 vintage has delivered a wine of immense concentration, mineral precision and extraordinary ageing potential.
The nose is breathtakingly complex and intensely aromatic, revealing aromas of preserved lemon, ripe apricot and Mirabelle plum layered with acacia blossom, floral honey and citrus oil. As the wine opens, notes of raw almond, toasted hazelnut and delicate spice emerge, complemented by hints of flint, wet stone and crushed granite. The aromatic profile is both powerful and incredibly refined, combining remarkable fruit richness with striking mineral intensity and freshness.
On the palate, it is full-bodied with extraordinary concentration, a silky texture and remarkable precision. Layers of apricot, white peach, citrus and ripe orchard fruits unfold seamlessly across the palate, supported by vibrant acidity and a profound mineral backbone. Despite its richness, the wine remains beautifully balanced, with a distinctive flinty character and subtle bitter-citrus tension providing exceptional energy. Lees ageing contributes luxurious texture without masking the vineyard's purity. The finish is exceptionally long, harmonious and persistent, carrying lingering notes of honey, almonds, preserved citrus and crushed stone. The style is monumental yet graceful, combining immense power with effortless elegance in the way only the greatest white Hermitage can achieve.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is one of the world's greatest white wines and a true collector's bottle. Compared to richer white Burgundy Grand Crus, Les Rocoules offers greater savoury complexity, mineral intensity and Rhône character while still delivering extraordinary texture and depth. Many collectors consider mature white Hermitage to be every bit as profound as the finest Montrachet or Corton-Charlemagne, and Marc Sorrel's tiny production makes this one of the rarest examples available. The exceptional 2023 vintage possesses incredible precision and structure, but this is ultimately a wine built for patience. While already fascinating with extended aeration, it will continue to evolve magnificently over the next 25–35 years. Perfect with lobster, scallops, turbot, roasted Bresse chicken, truffle-infused poultry, aged Comté or the finest French cuisine.
