The 2018 Fratelli Alessandria Barolo del Comune di Verduno is a beautifully traditional Barolo from one of Verduno’s benchmark producers. Sourced from a blend of the estate’s vineyards across the commune, including prized sites such as Pisapola, Campasso and Rocche dell’Olmo, the wine captures the elegance and perfume that have become hallmarks of Verduno. The Alessandria family has been crafting wines here since the 19th century, and this bottling is widely regarded as one of the finest expressions of the village.
The nose reveals sour cherry, redcurrant, violet and rose petal, layered with notes of crushed stone, spice and woodland herbs. On the palate, it is refined and energetic, with bright acidity, fine tannins and a distinctive mineral freshness. Robert Parker awarded the wine 94+ points, while Kerin O’Keefe scored it 96 points, praising its clarity, focus and exceptional balance. Approachable by Barolo standards, it still possesses the structure and complexity to age gracefully for many years.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A superb introduction to traditional Verduno Barolo, offering perfume, elegance and complexity rather than sheer power. Its combination of vibrant fruit, floral lift and fine tannins makes it a perfect match for braised beef, osso buco, truffle pasta, roast duck and aged hard cheeses. Drinking beautifully now with a decant, but it will continue to evolve through 2040 and beyond.
