The 2024 Fratelli Alessandria Verduno Pelaverga Speziale is a benchmark expression of one of Piedmont’s rarest native grape varieties. Produced by the historic Fratelli Alessandria estate in Verduno, the wine comes from a tiny appellation dedicated almost entirely to Pelaverga Piccolo, a variety celebrated for its perfume, freshness and unmistakable spice. Crafted in a bright, traditional style, Speziale perfectly captures the character that has made Pelaverga a cult favourite among wine lovers.
The nose bursts with wild strawberry, red cherry, rose petal and violet, lifted by the grape’s signature white pepper spice. Light-bodied and vibrant, the palate is silky and refreshing, with juicy red fruit, fine tannins and lively acidity driving a long, spicy finish. Jeb Dunnuck awarded the 2024 vintage 92 points, praising its floral perfume, energy and drinkability.
Ben’s Recommendation:
One of Italy’s most distinctive and food-friendly reds. Fragrant, spicy and wonderfully easy to drink, it’s best served with a slight chill alongside charcuterie, antipasto, grilled sausages, mushroom dishes or simple pasta. A brilliant alternative to Cru Beaujolais or lighter Pinot Noir styles, and perfect for enjoying over the next 3–5 years.
