The 2024 Pieropan Soave Classico Calvarino is a distinctive single-vineyard blend of 70% Garganega and 30% Trebbiano di Soave from Veneto, Italy. Part of the Pieropan family estate since 1901, Calvarino was first bottled separately in 1971, establishing its place among Italy’s pioneering vineyard-designated white wines. Its mature, organically farmed vines grow on volcanic soils rich in basalt, giving the wine a distinctive mineral character. Fermentation and maturation take place in glass-lined concrete tanks, with extended fine-lees contact adding texture and complexity while preserving the freshness and aromatic precision that define this celebrated Soave.
Expect pear, yellow peach, lemon and lime, complemented by elderflower, fresh herbs, almond and subtle smoky notes. The palate is dry and finely textured, with bright acidity and a saline finish bringing definition to its concentrated fruit. Kerin O’Keefe awarded the 2024 vintage 95 Points in July 2026, as recorded by the estate. James Suckling awarded 94 Points, highlighting its citrus intensity, crunchy fruit and lively acidity. What makes this bottle particularly appealing is its combination of single-vineyard character, texture and freshness without oak influence. For someone who enjoys Chablis or other mineral-driven whites, Calvarino offers a rewarding introduction to the depth that Soave can achieve. I would drink it now through approximately 2034, assuming good storage, enjoying its citrus and floral character young or allowing time for more honeyed, nutty and savoury complexity to emerge. Give it some time in a generous white-wine glass so its aromas and texture can unfold. Pair it with seafood risotto, scallops, roast chicken, vegetable tempura or creamy fish dishes. This is an excellent choice for an elegant Italian white with both immediate appeal and genuine cellaring potential.
