2023 Delas Saint Joseph Les Challeys Rouge
- Description
- Info
The 2023 Delas Frères Saint-Joseph Les Challeys Rouge is a beautifully crafted Northern Rhône Syrah that captures the freshness, elegance and granite-driven character of the Saint-Joseph appellation. Produced by Delas Frères, one of the Rhône Valley’s most respected historic houses, this cuvée is sourced from hand-harvested vineyards stretching between Mauves and Chavanay on steep slopes of granite, schist and gneiss. A portion of the wine is matured in French oak barrels while the remainder stays in tank, preserving vibrant fruit while adding subtle complexity. The 2023 vintage delivers exceptional purity, balance and immediate appeal.
The nose is fresh and expressive, revealing aromas of blackberry, raspberry and blackcurrant layered with cracked black pepper, violet and subtle floral notes. As the wine opens, hints of smoked herbs, cedar and delicate oak spice emerge, complemented by touches of graphite and crushed granite. The aromatic profile is vibrant and inviting, balancing bright fruit with the savoury complexity that defines classic Saint-Joseph.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with supple tannins, lively natural acidity and impressive balance. Layers of blackberry, cassis and ripe raspberry unfold across the palate, supported by notes of black pepper, dried herbs and gentle spice. The granite soils contribute freshness and mineral tension, while partial barrel ageing adds subtle texture without overshadowing the fruit. The finish is long, elegant and savoury, carrying lingering notes of dark berries, spice, crushed stone and floral lift. The style is approachable yet structured, offering a beautifully balanced expression of Northern Rhône Syrah that is equally enjoyable in its youth or after several years in bottle.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is an outstanding introduction to the elegance of Northern Rhône Syrah. Compared to richer and more powerful Australian Shiraz, Les Challeys offers greater savoury complexity, peppery spice and mineral precision while still delivering generous fruit and excellent drinkability. It’s a fantastic stepping stone into the wines of Saint-Joseph and a superb value alternative to more expensive appellations such as Hermitage or Côte-Rôtie. Drink now or cellar comfortably over the next 8–10 years. Perfect with roast lamb, grilled beef, duck, charcuterie, mushroom dishes, game meats or aged hard cheeses.
