SAINT-JOSEPH
Saint-Joseph is one of the most important appellations in France’s Northern Rhône Valley, stretching along the western bank of the Rhône River from Condrieu in the north to Cornas in the south. Known for producing both red and white wines of exceptional character, Saint-Joseph has become a benchmark region for elegant Syrah and expressive Rhône white varieties.
The appellation encompasses steep hillside vineyards planted on granite-rich soils, benefiting from a continental climate and favourable sun exposure. These conditions allow grapes to ripen fully while retaining freshness and structure, producing wines that balance power with finesse.
Red Saint-Joseph wines are made exclusively from Syrah and typically display aromas of blackberry, black cherry, violet, black pepper, olive tapenade, smoked meat, and spice. Compared to neighbouring Cornas and Côte-Rôtie, Saint-Joseph often offers a more approachable and refined style while retaining excellent ageing potential.
White Saint-Joseph wines are produced from Marsanne and Roussanne. These wines are known for flavours of apricot, white peach, citrus, honeysuckle, almond, and mineral notes. With age, they can develop additional complexity while maintaining freshness and elegance.
The appellation has a long winemaking history dating back centuries and is home to some of the Northern Rhône’s most respected producers, including Pierre Gonon, Yves Cuilleron, Domaine Courbis, Bernard Gripa, Jean-Louis Chave, and François Villard. Their wines have helped establish Saint-Joseph as one of France’s premier terroirs for both Syrah and Rhône white wines.
