The 2018 Kientzler Pinot Gris Grand Cru “Osterberg” is a highly refined Alsace Grand Cru from one of Ribeauvillé’s most respected family estates. Sourced from the east-facing Osterberg vineyard above the famed Geisberg site, the wine reflects the terroir’s marl-limestone-sandstone soils, which are renowned for producing Pinot Gris with both richness and remarkable freshness.

The nose is intensely aromatic and layered, showing ripe pear, yellow orchard fruit and citrus peel alongside honeyed notes, smoky minerality and delicate spice. The Osterberg terroir gives the wine a more classical, flinty and mineral-driven profile compared to richer Alsace Pinot Gris styles. Tom Stevenson has described Osterberg as “more classic and flinty, requiring longer in bottle,” highlighting its serious ageing potential.

On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a rich yet beautifully balanced texture. Exotic fruit, ripe stone fruit and subtle honeyed complexity are supported by vibrant acidity and chalky minerality, leading to a long, saline and persistent finish. The 2018 vintage carries approximately 33g/L residual sugar, but the freshness and mineral tension keep the wine poised and gastronomic rather than overtly sweet. Osterberg’s naturally structured profile gives the wine both immediate charm and excellent cellar potential.

Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is one of the finest “serious Pinot Gris” wines we recommend for collectors of Alsace and terroir-driven whites. Compared to Italian Pinot Grigio, it’s dramatically richer, more textural and more complex; compared to richer New World Pinot Gris styles, it still retains remarkable freshness and mineral precision. Osterberg is especially prized for balancing generosity with structure, making this a fantastic food wine as well as a cellar-worthy white. The 2018 vintage is particularly attractive because it combines ripeness and texture with outstanding balance. Drink now or cellar comfortably for another 10–15+ years. Perfect with foie gras, roast poultry, pork dishes, lobster or washed-rind cheeses.
