The 2023 The Chocolate Block is one of South Africa’s most iconic red blends, crafted in Swartland with a Syrah-dominant composition (around 74% Syrah, supported by Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and a touch of Viognier). It reflects a Rhône-inspired philosophy adapted to the Cape’s Mediterranean climate, combining richness with balance and approachability.

The nose is highly perfumed and expressive, showing blackberry, mulberry and dark cherry, layered with black olive, pepper, spice and subtle floral lift. There is a distinctive savoury edge alongside notes of cocoa, tobacco and herbs, adding depth and complexity.

On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a juicy, supple texture and fine-grained tannins. Dark fruit, spice and savoury elements are balanced by fresh acidity, leading to a vibrant, smooth and food-friendly finish. The style is polished and accessible, offering richness without heaviness, with a focus on drinkability and balance.
