ETNA

Etna is one of Italy's most exciting and prestigious wine regions, located on the slopes of Mount Etna, Europe's highest active volcano, on the eastern coast of Sicily. Over the past two decades, Etna has emerged as one of the world's most sought-after fine wine regions, celebrated for producing elegant, terroir-driven wines from ancient vineyards rooted in volcanic soils.

The region's vineyards are planted at elevations ranging from approximately 400 to over 1,000 metres above sea level, making them some of the highest vineyards in Europe. Warm Mediterranean sunshine is balanced by cool mountain temperatures and significant day-night temperature variation, allowing grapes to ripen slowly while retaining vibrant acidity, aromatic complexity, and freshness.

Etna's volcanic soils are formed from centuries of lava flows, ash, basalt, and volcanic rock. Each historic lava flow has created distinct vineyard sites, known locally as contrade, each with its own unique soil composition and personality. This extraordinary diversity has drawn comparisons to Burgundy, with individual vineyards producing remarkably different expressions of the same grape varieties.

Etna is best known for its indigenous grapes. Nerello Mascalese is the flagship red variety, producing elegant wines with aromas of red cherry, raspberry, rose petals, orange peel, herbs, spice, and volcanic minerality. Often compared to both Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo, it combines refined tannins with exceptional ageing potential. Nerello Cappuccio is commonly blended to add colour and fruit. Carricante is the region's leading white grape, producing vibrant wines with citrus, green apple, white flowers, saline minerality, and remarkable tension, while Catarratto is also widely planted throughout the region.

Many of Etna's vineyards contain ungrafted vines that are more than 80 or even 100 years old, thanks to the volcanic soils' natural resistance to phylloxera. Combined with sustainable farming and minimal intervention winemaking, these old vines produce wines of exceptional concentration, complexity, and authenticity.

Leading producers including Benanti, Girolamo Russo, Tenuta delle Terre Nere, Passopisciaro, Frank Cornelissen, Graci, Pietradolce, and Sciara have helped establish Etna as one of Italy's premier fine wine regions. Their wines consistently receive international acclaim for their elegance, precision, and unmistakable volcanic character.

Today, Etna is regarded as one of the world's great terroirs, producing wines that combine Mediterranean warmth with alpine freshness and remarkable mineral expression. Its unique landscape, indigenous grape varieties, and ancient vineyards have made it a favourite among collectors, sommeliers, and wine enthusiasts seeking some of Italy's most distinctive wines.
