The 2025 Rongo Wines Prelude Aglianico is a fresh, unconventional expression of the southern Italian variety, sourced from the Chalmers vineyard at Merbein in the Murray Darling region. Made in a deliberately lighter style, it offers lifted aromas of wild strawberry, Morello cherry, redcurrant and plum, joined by raspberry, rosewater, red liquorice, fresh sage and a subtle smoky note.
On the palate, it is light, juicy and energetic, with flavours of black cherry, cranberry, boysenberry and blackcurrant. Bright acidity keeps the wine refreshing, while polished, pithy tannins provide gentle grip alongside touches of pepper, tobacco, charcoal and leather. The finish is brisk, floral and highly drinkable, presenting a much softer introduction to Aglianico than traditional Italian examples.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is an excellent choice for adventurous drinkers seeking a juicy, savoury red that can be lightly chilled. Best enjoyed now and over the next three to five years. Ideal with sweet-and-sour pork, Thai-style raw marinated crab, fried taro duck, charcuterie, barbecue chicken or mushroom pizza.
