The 2024 Ata Rangi Pinot Noir is one of New Zealand’s benchmark Pinot Noirs, produced from some of the oldest Pinot Noir vines in Martinborough by one of the country’s most iconic wineries. Founded by Clive Paton in 1980, Ata Rangi has earned an international reputation for crafting Pinot Noir of extraordinary elegance, precision and longevity. The 2024 vintage is regarded by the estate as one of the finest they have ever produced, combining ideal ripening conditions with exceptional balance and concentration.
The nose is beautifully layered, offering aromas of red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry alongside dried orange peel, peppercorn, rose petal and subtle earthy spice. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with silky tannins, vibrant acidity and remarkable tension. Pure red fruit is supported by fine mineral structure and a long, savoury finish that reflects the hallmark elegance of Martinborough Pinot Noir.
Critics have been unanimous in their praise. Stephen Wong MW awarded 97 points, describing the wine as “quietly majestic” with immense cellaring potential, while James Suckling awarded 96 points, highlighting its lively fruit, refined texture and mineral-driven finish.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, Ata Rangi remains one of the Southern Hemisphere’s greatest Pinot Noir producers. Compared to Central Otago Pinot Noir, it is more restrained, savoury and mineral-driven; compared to top Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir, it offers greater aromatic complexity and a finer tannin profile. The exceptional 2024 vintage delivers everything that has made Ata Rangi a global benchmark—purity, finesse and outstanding ageing potential. Drink from 2027 onwards or cellar comfortably for 15–20+ years. Perfect with duck, quail, venison, mushroom dishes and refined modern cuisine.
