The 2023 Onannon Flinders The Orchard Vineyard Chardonnay is a single-vineyard Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay sourced from a small, non-irrigated vineyard in Flinders overlooking Western Port Bay. Planted around 30 years ago and sheltered by surrounding orchards and hedges, the site produces fruit with impressive concentration and natural freshness. The wine opens with aromas of preserved lemon, white peach and nectarine, alongside subtle notes of fennel, flint and savoury spice.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied and beautifully textured, with layers of citrus, stone fruit and grapefruit supported by bright acidity and a distinct saline mineral character. Barrel fermentation, full malolactic fermentation and extended lees aging contribute complexity and depth, while the absence of new oak allows the vineyard character to remain front and centre. The finish is long, focused and finely detailed, with lingering citrus, flint and savoury notes.
Ben's Recommendation: At Wine More Cellars, this is an outstanding Chardonnay for those who appreciate site-driven wines with texture, minerality and precision. Drinking beautifully now, it also has the structure to develop further over the next 5–8 years. Pair with grilled kingfish, scallops, roast chicken, creamy seafood dishes or soft-ripened cheeses.
