The 2023 Littorai Mays Canyon Vineyard Pinot Noir is 100% Pinot Noir from a distinctive site near Guerneville, on the western edge of California’s Russian River Valley. Founded by Ted and Heidi Lemon in 1993, Littorai reflects Ted’s Burgundian experience, including his work at Domaine Roulot, and a commitment to expressing individual vineyards. Mays Canyon occupies the Porter-Bass estate, around eight miles from the Pacific Ocean, with the Russian River surrounding the site on three sides. Farmed using organic and biodynamic methods, its vines grow in gravelly loam over weathered sandstone and shale, with the current plantings dating from 1999.
The 2023 combines black cherry, blueberry and sour cherry with rose petals, delicate flowers and black tea, bringing together expressive fruit and a fresh, finely structured palate. The cooler, extended growing season helped preserve the aromatic lift and definition highlighted in contemporary reviews.
