Sonoma Coast is one of California’s most prestigious cool-climate wine regions, known for producing elegant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay influenced by the nearby Pacific Ocean. Located along the western edge of Sonoma County, the region experiences constant marine breezes, coastal fog and moderate temperatures, allowing grapes to ripen slowly while retaining vibrant acidity and aromatic complexity.
The cool conditions of Sonoma Coast create wines that are more restrained and refined compared with warmer Californian regions. Pinot Noir typically shows flavours of red cherry, raspberry, cranberry and subtle earthy spice, while Chardonnay often reveals citrus, green apple, white peach and mineral notes supported by bright freshness and balanced texture.
The appellation stretches across a large and diverse coastal landscape, with vineyards planted on rugged hillsides, coastal ridges and inland valleys. Within Sonoma Coast, several highly regarded sub-regions such as Fort Ross-Seaview, Annapolis and the Petaluma Gap produce distinctive expressions shaped by altitude, wind exposure and soil composition.
Today, Sonoma Coast is recognised globally for its cool-climate wines that combine California fruit purity with Burgundian finesse.
