The 2023 Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Santenots is a beautifully expressive 100% Pinot Noir from the Santenots Premier Cru vineyard in Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune. Domaine-owned fruit gives this wine impressive concentration, with alpine strawberry, redcurrant and wild cherry joined by floral and subtle earthy notes. Despite the warmth of the site, early picking in 2023 retained excellent freshness and balance.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied and generous, combining juicy red fruit with fine-grained tannins, fresh acidity and excellent length. Around one-third whole bunches were retained during fermentation, adding aromatic lift and structure without overwhelming the fruit. Jasper Morris MW awarded 91–94 points, highlighting its depth, balanced tannins and ageing potential.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is an excellent choice for Burgundy collectors seeking Volnay with both finesse and impressive depth. Best enjoyed from around 2030–2038, although it can continue developing beyond this window in a good cellar. Ideal with roast duck, lamb, beef bourguignon, mushroom dishes or aged Comté.
