The 2022 Clos Mogador Priorat is the flagship wine of René Barbier’s iconic estate and one of the benchmark wines of modern Spain. Sourced from organically farmed vineyards surrounding Gratallops, the blend is led by old-vine Garnacha and Cariñena, with small amounts of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Grown on Priorat’s famed llicorella slate soils and crafted with minimal intervention, it captures the power, complexity and mineral character that have made Clos Mogador a legendary name.
The nose reveals blackberry, black cherry and wild herbs alongside notes of lavender, graphite and crushed slate. Rich yet beautifully balanced, the palate combines concentrated dark fruit with fine tannins, vibrant acidity and remarkable freshness. Layers of liquorice, spice and mineral complexity unfold through a long, savoury finish. The magnum format allows for slower ageing and even greater development over time.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A world-class Priorat that delivers both power and finesse in equal measure. Complex, structured and deeply expressive, it pairs beautifully with slow-roasted lamb, beef short ribs, venison and aged Manchego. While already impressive with a decant, the magnum format will reward long-term cellaring and should evolve magnificently through 2045 and beyond.
