The 2018 Penfolds Grange is a monumental South Australian red composed of 97% Shiraz and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Clare Valley and matured for 18 months in new American oak. The exceptional 2018 vintage delivers intense aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant and dark plum, layered with liquorice, anise, dark chocolate, mocha, roasted nuts and savoury spice.
On the palate, it is immensely concentrated and powerful, yet remarkably controlled. Dense black and blue fruits are supported by graphite-like tannins, vibrant acidity and integrated notes of espresso, vanilla, spice and smoky oak. The finish is exceptionally long, structured and persistent, marking this as one of the greatest modern releases of Grange.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, the 2018 Grange is a benchmark Australian collector’s wine with extraordinary concentration and long-term cellaring potential. Ideally cellar it for another decade or longer; if opening now, decant for at least four hours and serve in a large Bordeaux-style glass. Pair with slow-roasted beef, charcoal-grilled rib-eye, venison, braised lamb shoulder or aged hard cheese.
