The 1989 Domaine du Manoir de Montreuil Calvados is an exceptional single-vintage Calvados Pays d'Auge from the historic Giard family, who have produced Calvados in Normandy for over fourteen generations. Distilled exclusively from cider made with traditional estate-grown apple varieties, the spirit is double distilled in copper pot stills and matured in seasoned French oak casks for more than three decades. As a true millésime, it is made entirely from the 1989 apple harvest rather than a blend, offering a unique snapshot of an outstanding vintage. The nose is deeply complex, revealing caramelised baked apple, dried apricot and orange peel layered with vanilla, cinnamon, toasted oak and subtle walnut notes.
On the palate, it is rich and silky with remarkable balance between mature oak and vibrant fruit. Concentrated flavours of baked apple, toffee, honey, baking spices and roasted nuts unfold over hints of leather and gentle rancio, finishing long, warm and beautifully refined. Powerful yet elegant, this is a superb mature Calvados that showcases the depth, purity and longevity of traditional Pays d'Auge production.
Ben's Recommendation:
The 1989 Domaine du Manoir de Montreuil Calvados 42% Alc. is best enjoyed neat at 16–18°C in a tulip-shaped glass after dinner. It pairs beautifully with apple tart, crème brûlée, dark chocolate, Roquefort or aged Comté, and also makes a superb contemplative digestif. Drink now or continue to cellar, as this vintage Calvados will remain stable and rewarding for many years.
