Pouilly-Fuissé
Pouilly-Fuissé is the most prestigious white wine appellation in the Mâconnais region of southern Burgundy, France. Renowned for producing rich and expressive Chardonnay, the wines combine ripe fruit character with the limestone-driven minerality that defines the great white wines of Burgundy.
The vineyards of Pouilly-Fuissé are located around the villages of Fuissé, Solutré-Pouilly, Vergisson, and Chaintré, where rolling hills and limestone-rich soils create ideal conditions for Chardonnay. The warmer climate of the Mâconnais allows grapes to achieve excellent ripeness while still retaining freshness, resulting in wines that are generous yet balanced.
Typical Pouilly-Fuissé wines display aromas of ripe apple, pear, citrus, white peach, and hazelnut, often supported by subtle notes of butter, toast, and flinty minerality when aged in oak. The palate is usually full-bodied and textured, with vibrant acidity and a long, elegant finish.
In 2020, Pouilly-Fuissé achieved a historic milestone when 22 vineyards were officially classified as Premier Cru, marking the first time the Mâconnais region received Premier Cru status. These vineyards highlight the exceptional terroir of the region and further cement Pouilly-Fuissé’s reputation as one of Burgundy’s finest sources of Chardonnay.
Today, Pouilly-Fuissé represents some of the best value in Burgundy, offering the complexity and terroir expression of classic Burgundian Chardonnay while remaining more approachable than many wines from the Côte de Beaune.
