NELDNER ROAD
Neldner Road is a premium Barossa wine producer founded by legendary Australian winemaker Dave Powell, the original founder of Torbreck Vintners. Based in Marananga in the western Barossa Valley, the estate represents the continuation of Powell's four-decade commitment to preserving ancient vineyards and producing powerful, expressive wines that capture the distinctive character of the Barossa and Eden Valleys.
Few individuals have played a more influential role in the modern development of premium Barossa Shiraz than Dave Powell. His career began at Rockford, where he learned traditional winemaking techniques under Robert O'Callaghan, before establishing Torbreck Vintners in 1994. During the following two decades, Powell helped transform Torbreck into one of Australia's most internationally recognised fine-wine producers.
At Torbreck, Powell became particularly celebrated for wines such as RunRig, The Laird, The Factor and Les Amis, demonstrating the extraordinary potential of old-vine Barossa Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro. His approach was deeply influenced by the Rhône Valley, particularly the tradition of combining exceptional vineyard parcels to create wines of complexity, structure and longevity.
After departing Torbreck in 2013, Powell continued his winemaking journey through Powell & Son, before eventually establishing the identity now known as Neldner Road. The name refers to the road on which his winery and home vineyard are located in Marananga, one of the most celebrated districts of the western Barossa.
For Powell, Neldner Road represents a return to the fundamental principles that shaped his career: ancient vines, exceptional vineyard sites, traditional winemaking and the belief that great wines must express their origins.
The estate draws fruit from two distinct yet complementary regions: the warm, powerful Barossa Valley and the cooler, elevated Eden Valley. Rather than treating one region as superior to the other, Powell considers both essential to understanding the full potential of the greater Barossa.
The western Barossa, particularly Marananga, Seppeltsfield and Greenock, is celebrated for producing deeply concentrated Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro. Ancient vines growing in ironstone-rich clay, sand and limestone-derived soils develop remarkable flavour intensity, while the region's warm climate contributes generous fruit and substantial tannin structure.
By contrast, the elevated vineyards of Flaxman's Valley in the Eden Valley experience cooler growing conditions and longer ripening periods. These sites produce wines with greater aromatic lift, natural acidity and fine structural detail, offering an important counterpoint to the richness of the Barossa Valley floor.
This contrast forms the foundation of Neldner Road's philosophy. Powell believes that the greatest expressions of the Barossa are not necessarily confined to individual vineyards, but can also emerge through the thoughtful blending of fruit from different regions and sites.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Neldner Road is its access to historic vineyards planted more than a century ago. Many of these vines have survived through generations of family ownership, periods of changing market demand and the significant challenges associated with maintaining low-yielding old vineyards.
Powell has personally worked with several of these sites for decades, helping preserve vines that might otherwise have been removed. His commitment to old-vine viticulture is particularly significant in the Barossa, where some of Australia's oldest surviving Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro plantings remain in production.
The Neldner Road portfolio is divided into two principal collections: Regional Wines and Single Vineyard Wines.
The Regional collection explores the broader identities of the Barossa and Eden Valleys. These wines include Barossa Valley Shiraz, Barossa & Eden Valleys Shiraz, Grenache Shiraz Mataro, Eden Valley Riesling and Barossa Valley Marsanne, alongside the limited-production Chatterton's Shiraz.
Neldner Road Barossa Valley Shiraz is sourced predominantly from mature vineyards in Marananga and Seppeltsfield. Individual parcels are fermented separately in traditional concrete vats before being basket pressed and matured in large French oak foudres.
The resulting style reflects the generosity of western Barossa Shiraz, with dark plum, blackberry, spice, graphite and savoury complexity. Large-format oak maturation provides structure and texture without allowing excessive new oak influence to overwhelm the character of the fruit.
Neldner Road Barossa & Eden Valleys Shiraz demonstrates Powell's belief in the complementary strengths of the two regions. Combining the concentration of mature Barossa Shiraz vines with the aromatic freshness of cooler Eden Valley fruit, the wine offers both depth and elegance.
The blend brings together dark fruit, spice and savoury complexity with floral aromatics, freshness and finely integrated tannins. It represents a continuation of Powell's longstanding appreciation for the role of regional blending in producing exceptional Barossa wines.
The Barossa Valley Grenache Shiraz Mataro celebrates the three traditional red varieties of the southern Rhône. Predominantly Grenache, the blend incorporates Shiraz and Mataro from mature, dry-grown vineyards, some approaching or exceeding a century in age.
Grenache contributes red fruit, cherry and aromatic spice, while Shiraz adds depth and structure. Mataro introduces savoury complexity, darker fruit and firm tannins, creating a wine with both generosity and impressive ageing potential.
Another particularly significant wine is Chatterton's Shiraz, named in honour of Aileen and Rowland Chatterton, whose friendship and support were important to Powell during a difficult period in his career.
Produced from a selection of exceptionally old Shiraz vineyards across the Barossa and Eden Valleys, Chatterton's reflects Powell's belief that a carefully assembled blend can achieve greater complexity than any individual vineyard component. The wine is matured in French oak and represents one of the most personal expressions in the Neldner Road portfolio.
Beyond these regional wines, the estate's Single Vineyard collection provides a detailed exploration of the Barossa's most exceptional historic vineyard sites.
Each wine is named after the family associated with the original vineyard, acknowledging the generations of growers who planted and preserved these remarkable vines.
Among the most prestigious is Kraehe Marananga Shiraz, produced from a historic vineyard situated on the ironstone-rich slopes of Marananga. The Kraehe family were among the early settlers of the Barossa, and some of the vines on the property are now more than 100 years old.
The vineyard's red ironstone-rich clay soils contribute extraordinary concentration, dark fruit and substantial tannin structure. Powell matures the wine in specially selected Dominique Laurent French oak barrels, allowing the powerful fruit and oak to integrate slowly.
Kraehe represents the opulent side of great Barossa Shiraz: blackberry, plum, dark cherry, mocha, earth and spice supported by profound concentration and an exceptionally long finish.
Its counterpart is Steinert Flaxman's Valley Shiraz, sourced from one of the Eden Valley's most remarkable old-vine vineyards.
Situated at approximately 480 metres elevation, the Steinert vineyard contains dry-grown Shiraz vines more than 120 years old. Its quartzitic soils, elevated position and cooler growing conditions contribute aromatic complexity, natural freshness and beautifully refined tannins.
Where Kraehe emphasises the richness and concentration of western Barossa Shiraz, Steinert expresses the elegance and structural precision of the Eden Valley. Together, these two wines represent Powell's interpretation of the contrasting personalities of the greater Barossa.
Loechel Eden Valley Shiraz offers another distinctive high-altitude expression. The vineyard sits at approximately 440 metres near the southern end of the Eden Valley township, where granitic loam soils and an easterly aspect create conditions suited to slow, even ripening.
The wine combines dark cherry, blackberry, cassis and subtle spice with savoury notes and a persistent acid backbone. Its combination of concentration and freshness demonstrates the particular appeal of mature Eden Valley Shiraz.
Herrmann Shiraz, from the Kalimna district of the northern Barossa, represents a different expression of the region. The vineyard contains Shiraz vines more than 80 years old, growing in red-yellow clay beneath a layer of pale sand.
These soils contribute a distinctive combination of perfumed blue fruit, generous texture and deep structural complexity. The resulting wine captures the richness and sensual character traditionally associated with northern Barossa Shiraz.
For Grenache enthusiasts, Brennecke Seppeltsfield Grenache is one of the most important wines in the collection.
The vineyard was planted in 1901 and is situated on a south-easterly slope in the Seppeltsfield district. Its ancient bush vines grow in heavy red clay over limestone subsoil, producing remarkably concentrated fruit with substantial natural tannin.
Powell has worked with this vineyard since 1992 and considers it among the exceptional Grenache sites capable of producing a serious, age-worthy single-varietal wine.
The Kleinig Greenock Mataro further demonstrates the estate's commitment to preserving the Barossa's traditional Rhône varieties. Mataro, also known as Mourvèdre, contributes deeply savoury character, firm structure and the capacity for extended maturation when grown in suitable old-vine sites.
Although Neldner Road is best known for its red wines, the estate also produces compelling whites.
Steinert Riesling, sourced from the cooler Eden Valley, highlights the region's natural suitability for aromatic white varieties. Bright citrus fruit, floral aromatics and lively acidity provide a refreshing contrast to the estate's more powerful red wines.
Steinborner Marsanne reflects Powell's longstanding admiration for Rhône varieties. Marsanne can produce beautifully textured white wines with stone fruit, honeyed citrus and savoury complexity, developing greater richness and depth with bottle age.
In the vineyard, Powell remains closely involved in viticulture, personally pruning and tending vines wherever possible. Traditional rod-and-spur pruning for Shiraz and bush-vine management for Grenache and Mataro are employed to preserve the natural character of these historic plantings.
The estate follows organic-minded and sustainable vineyard practices, with minimal intervention designed to protect soil health and encourage the authentic expression of each site.
In the winery, the approach remains deliberately traditional. Red wines are fermented in open concrete vats, with regular pump-overs and gentle basket pressing used to manage extraction.
Following fermentation, wines are matured in French oak, including large-format foudres, puncheons and barriques. The choice of vessel depends on the character and structure of the individual wine, with larger formats often preferred for regional blends and carefully selected barriques reserved for more concentrated single-vineyard releases.
The wines are generally bottled without fining or filtration, preserving texture, complexity and the natural character developed through fermentation and maturation.
Despite the substantial concentration of many Neldner Road wines, Powell's objective is not simply power. His stated ambition is to preserve freshness, vibrancy and liveliness without compromising vineyard expression.
This philosophy is particularly important in the context of modern Barossa wine. While the region is internationally recognised for its powerful Shiraz, its finest vineyards are capable of producing wines that combine remarkable concentration with balance, complexity and longevity.
Neldner Road therefore represents more than another chapter in Dave Powell's career. It is the continuation of a lifelong commitment to the Barossa's historic vineyards, the families who have preserved them and the extraordinary potential of old-vine Australian wine.
For collectors familiar with Torbreck RunRig, The Laird and Les Amis, Neldner Road offers a fascinating opportunity to explore the philosophy of the winemaker who originally helped establish those wines. The connection lies not in identical winemaking or branding, but in Powell's enduring belief in exceptional old vines, traditional techniques and the greatness of Barossa terroir.
From regional Shiraz and Grenache blends to the exceptional single-vineyard Kraehe, Steinert, Brennecke, Loechel and Herrmann, Neldner Road presents a compelling portrait of the Barossa and Eden Valleys through the experience of one of Australia's most influential winemakers.
