Melon de Bourgogne is a classic French white grape variety best known as the sole grape used in the production of Muscadet wines from the Loire Valley. Despite its name suggesting Burgundian origins, the variety has become synonymous with the western Loire, particularly the vineyards surrounding Nantes near the Atlantic coast.
The grape thrives in the cool maritime climate of the Loire Valley, where moderate temperatures and diverse soils of granite, gneiss, schist, and limestone contribute to wines with freshness, minerality, and precision. These conditions allow Melon de Bourgogne to retain vibrant natural acidity while expressing the character of its vineyard site.
Melon de Bourgogne wines are typically light-bodied, crisp, and refreshing, displaying aromas and flavours of lemon, green apple, pear, white flowers, and subtle saline notes. The wines are often characterised by their distinctive mineral profile and clean finish, making them exceptionally versatile at the table.
Many of the finest examples are produced under the Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine appellation and aged "sur lie," a traditional technique where the wine remains on its yeast lees for an extended period. This process adds texture, complexity, and subtle notes of bread dough and nuts while maintaining freshness and vitality.
Melon de Bourgogne is particularly renowned as one of the world's great seafood wine varieties. Its bright acidity and mineral character make it an ideal match for oysters, shellfish, seafood platters, and a wide range of coastal cuisine.
