The 2022 Giovanni Rosso Etna Rosso Contrade Nuove is a beautifully perfumed Nerello Mascalese from the northern slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, produced by the Rosso family, better known for their acclaimed Barolo wines from Serralunga d'Alba. Davide Rosso expanded the family's work to Etna after acquiring vineyards on the volcano's northern side, where high elevation, dramatic day-night temperature differences and mineral-rich volcanic soils create a particularly distinctive expression of Nerello Mascalese. Contrade Nuove is made from 100% Nerello Mascalese, combining the variety's naturally pale colour, floral perfume and fine tannins with the smoky, stony character associated with Etna. The 2022 growing season was warm, although well-timed rainfall helped preserve freshness and balance in the fruit.
