The 2024 Bindi Dhillon Glenhope Accidental Red is one of Australia’s most original and delightfully drinkable red wines, created by Michael Dhillon of the iconic Bindi Wines estate in the Macedon Ranges. Originally born by chance when surplus Merlot destined for rosé was blended with Shiraz pressings, the wine proved so successful that it has become a permanent part of the Dhillon range. The 2024 release continues this playful philosophy, blending Merlot berries fermented with pressed Shiraz juice and, for the first time, a small 5% addition of Malbec. The result is a vibrant, light-bodied red that delivers premium Macedon Ranges fruit in an effortlessly approachable style.

The nose is wonderfully fragrant and expressive, revealing aromas of Morello cherry, red cherry and wild raspberry layered with lavender, fresh herbs and gentle spice. As the wine opens, notes of wood smoke, orange rind and earthy undertones emerge, while subtle hints of crushed berries and floral lift add complexity. The aromatic profile is bright, vibrant and immediately inviting, offering a freshness rarely found in wines at this price point.

On the palate, it is light to medium-bodied with silky tannins, juicy red fruit and refreshing natural acidity. Flavours of red cherry, raspberry and plum are supported by subtle spice, gentle earthiness and a delicate savoury edge from the Shiraz and Malbec. The reduced skin contact creates an elegant, Pinot Noir-like texture, while the fine, pippy tannins provide enough structure to keep the wine focused and refreshing. The finish is smooth, vibrant and highly drinkable, carrying lingering notes of red berries, spice and a touch of mineral savouriness. The style is modern, playful and exceptionally versatile, equally enjoyable lightly chilled or served at cellar temperature.

Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is one of the most enjoyable and best-value reds you'll find from a producer of Bindi’s calibre. Compared to traditional Merlot or Shiraz blends, the Accidental Red is lighter, brighter and far more energetic, with a silky, Pinot Noir-inspired texture that makes it incredibly easy to drink. It’s a wine that doesn’t take itself too seriously while still showcasing premium Macedon Ranges fruit and meticulous winemaking. Perfect for casual entertaining, picnics or summer drinking, and it's equally delicious served slightly chilled. Drink now or over the next 3–5 years. Perfect with charcuterie, roast chicken, wood-fired pizza, grilled pork, burgers, mushroom dishes or simply enjoyed on its own with good company.
