The Champagne Laherte Frères 1er Cru Nature de Craie NV is a distinctive Blanc de Blancs from Premier Cru vineyards in Vertus and Voipreux on the Côte des Blancs. Made from 100% Chardonnay, with vines planted in 1960, 1965 and 1987, the wine takes its name from the chalk-rich soils of these sites. The Base 2023 release shows lemon, white peach and green apple alongside white flowers, chalk, oyster shell and subtle savoury notes. Fermentation in small barrels and full malolactic conversion give the wine added depth and texture.
On the palate, it is finely textured and beautifully focused, with lively acidity supporting layers of citrus, orchard fruit and delicate stone fruit. Lemon and green apple are complemented by white peach, subtle floral notes and a gentle yeasty richness, while the chalky terroir brings a pronounced saline and stony mineral character. The wine is Brut Nature with zero dosage, allowing the purity of the Chardonnay and mineral freshness to remain clearly expressed. Subtle savoury and smoky notes develop through the mid-palate, leading to a dry, long and persistent finish with lingering citrus, chalk and saline notes.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is an excellent choice for Champagne drinkers who enjoy precise, mineral-driven Blanc de Blancs with depth and very little sweetness. The zero-dosage style makes it particularly well suited to food, while the mature vines and chalk-rich Premier Cru sites provide impressive concentration and texture. Best enjoyed now or over the next 5–7 years. Serve chilled with oysters, seared scallops, sashimi, grilled prawns with lemon, roast chicken with herbs, or aged Comté.
