The 2025 Head Wines Old Vine Shiraz is a richly layered Barossa and Eden Valley Shiraz crafted from a selection of mature vineyards, including parcels planted from the 1940s through to the 1960s. Produced by Alex Head, the wine reflects his focus on preserving the purity and balance of old-vine fruit rather than relying on excessive extraction or heavy oak influence. The nose is deeply expressive, revealing aromas of blackberry, dark plum and black cherry layered with cracked pepper, liquorice, mocha and subtle floral spice.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with concentrated dark fruit supported by fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity that bring freshness and structure. Flavours of blackberry, plum preserve and dark cherry are complemented by savoury spice, cocoa and subtle earthy complexity, while partial whole-bunch fermentation contributes aromatic lift and textural detail. Maturation in a combination of new and seasoned French oak helps add polish without overshadowing the richness and natural sweetness of the old-vine fruit. The finish is long, balanced and persistent with fine tannin grip and classic Barossa depth.
Ben’s Recommendation: At Wine More Cellars, this Old Vine Shiraz is an excellent choice for customers who enjoy traditional Barossa Shiraz with concentration, layered dark fruit and savoury structure while still retaining freshness and finesse. Particularly well suited to slow-cooked lamb shoulder, grilled ribeye, smoked brisket or aged hard cheeses. Drinking beautifully now with decanting, though the old-vine concentration and tannin structure will reward careful cellaring over the next 8–12 years.
