HEAD WINES
Head Wines is a highly regarded boutique winery based in the Barossa Valley, founded by winemaker Alex Head. Known for producing expressive and terroir-driven wines, Head Wines focuses primarily on old-vine Shiraz, alongside small parcels of Grenache and Mataro sourced from some of the Barossa’s most historic vineyards.
Alex Head established the label in 2006 after gaining experience working in both Barossa Valley and Burgundy, bringing a refined, site-focused philosophy to traditionally powerful Barossa varieties. Many of the vineyards used by Head Wines are planted with old vines ranging from 50 to over 100 years of age, delivering remarkable concentration and depth.
The winemaking approach emphasises minimal intervention, small-batch fermentation, and careful oak use to preserve the purity of fruit and vineyard character. The result is a collection of Barossa wines that balance richness and structure with elegance and complexity.
Today, Head Wines is widely recognised as one of the most exciting small producers in the Barossa Valley, producing limited quantities of distinctive wines that capture the heritage and power of Australia’s most famous Shiraz region.
