The 2022 Head The Brunette Shiraz is a powerful yet finely structured Barossa Shiraz that reflects Alex Head’s focus on site expression, savoury complexity and long-lived balance rather than excessive weight. Sourced primarily from a vineyard planted in 1965 in the elevated Flaxman Valley at around 480 metres altitude, the wine captures a darker and more mineral style of Barossa Shiraz. The nose is deeply expressive, revealing aromas of blood plum, blackberry and mulberry layered with cracked pepper, sage, ironstone, jasmine and subtle mocha spice.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with concentrated dark fruit, fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity creating both depth and precision. Flavours of black cherry, plum and dark berry fruit are supported by notes of dark chocolate, spice and savoury earthiness, while 10% whole-bunch fermentation contributes aromatic lift and structural detail. Maturation for 18 months in French oak, including a portion of new 500L puncheons, adds texture and polish without overwhelming the vineyard character. The lean ironstone and quartz-rich soils of Flaxman Valley give the wine a mineral edge and firm tannin line that carry through a long, persistent finish.
Ben’s Recommendation: At Wine More Cellars, this Shiraz is an outstanding choice for customers looking for a more refined and site-driven Barossa Shiraz with savoury depth, structure and genuine cellaring potential. Particularly well suited to grilled ribeye, slow-cooked lamb shoulder, smoked beef brisket or hard aged cheeses. Drinking impressively now with decanting, though the wine’s concentration and tannin profile will reward careful cellaring over the next 10–15 years.
