The 2025 ChaLou Pinot Gris is a beautifully expressive cool-climate Pinot Gris from Orange, crafted by husband-and-wife team Steve Mobbs and Nadja Wallington. Grown at approximately 900 metres above sea level on the estate’s high-altitude vineyard, the wine reflects ChaLou’s commitment to producing site-driven wines that balance texture, freshness and complexity. Wild fermentation and minimal intervention in the winery allow the vineyard character to take centre stage, resulting in a Pinot Gris with far more depth and personality than the style often receives.
The nose reveals quince, nashi pear, Bosc pear and Pink Lady apple alongside hints of ginger, lemon rind and bee pollen. The palate is dry, textural and beautifully layered, combining ripe orchard and tropical fruits with bright natural acidity, gentle phenolic grip and a subtle waxy, lanolin-like texture. Fresh yet savoury, it delivers impressive concentration and persistence while retaining the vibrant energy that defines Orange’s best white wines. The 2025 release received 92 points from the Halliday Wine Companion, highlighting its quality and regional character.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A superb modern Pinot Gris that offers genuine complexity without sacrificing drinkability. Textural, aromatic and highly food-friendly, it pairs beautifully with roast chicken, pork and fennel sausages, miso-glazed salmon, mushroom risotto, mezze platters and soft cheeses. Enjoy now and over the next 4–6 years while its vibrant fruit, savoury texture and freshness are at their peak.
