The 2024 Wilfred Monte is a vibrant Montepulciano from McLaren Vale, South Australia. Sourced from a single vineyard planted over deep Tatachilla Limestone, it shows ripe black cherry, mulberry and plum alongside wild herbs, black pepper, subtle cocoa and earthy spice.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied and supple, with vibrant acidity bringing freshness to juicy red and dark fruit. Fine, chalky tannins provide structure, while a savoury thread of herbs and spice adds complexity. The fruit was wild fermented with indigenous yeasts before spending 12 months in seasoned French oak hogsheads, giving texture without dominating the fruit.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is an excellent choice for Montepulciano drinkers who enjoy juicy fruit, fresh acidity and savoury complexity with fine, structured tannins. Enjoy now or allow some further bottle development. Ideal with wood-fired pizza, grilled lamb, pasta with tomato-based sauces, pork, charcuterie or hard cheeses.
