Montepulciano

Montepulciano is a historic wine region in Tuscany, central Italy, best known for producing Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, one of Italy’s classic red wines. The vineyards surround the medieval hilltop town of Montepulciano, located between the regions of Chianti Classico and Montalcino.

The wines of Montepulciano are primarily made from Sangiovese, locally known as Prugnolo Gentile, often blended with small amounts of other traditional Tuscan varieties. The region’s rolling hills, clay and limestone soils, and warm Mediterranean climate create wines that balance ripe fruit, elegant structure and ageing potential.

Typical Vino Nobile di Montepulciano wines show aromas of red cherry, plum and dried herbs, often accompanied by notes of spice, tobacco and subtle earthy complexity. Compared with other Tuscan Sangiovese wines, they are often known for their smooth tannins and refined elegance.
