The 2024 Spinifex Grenache Gris is only the second release from Peter and Magali Schell’s young Grenache Gris planting at their Dominion Vineyard in Vine Vale, Barossa Valley. Drawn from sandy soils near the winery, the fruit was hand-harvested, given a short period on skins and fermented in large seasoned oak foudres before spending eight months on lees. The result is a beautifully textural white that reflects both the Barossa and the Schells’ deep experience with southern French varieties.
The nose shows orange blossom, white peach and wild herbs, with hints of citrus peel and spice. Silky and layered on the palate, it combines stone fruit richness with gentle phenolic grip and a refreshing saline edge. The finish is long, savoury and moreish, with Campbell Mattinson awarding the wine 93 points for its texture, complexity and presence.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A fascinating and highly food-friendly white for those looking beyond the usual Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. Textural, savoury and full of character, it pairs beautifully with grilled seafood, roast chicken, Mediterranean dishes and soft cheeses.
