SPINIFEX

Spinifex is a highly regarded boutique winery in the Barossa Valley, founded by winemaker Pete Schell. Known for its minimal intervention approach, the winery focuses on expressing vineyard site and balance rather than sheer power. Working with old vines and traditional Rhône varieties, Spinifex aims to produce wines that reflect purity, texture and a strong sense of place.

The portfolio is centred around Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro (Mourvèdre), along with a range of thoughtful blends and some alternative varieties. Unlike classic Barossa producers that emphasise richness, ripeness and oak, Spinifex wines are typically more medium-bodied, savoury and textural, often with lower alcohol and greater finesse.

The winemaking style leans toward whole-bunch fermentation, wild yeasts and the use of neutral or large-format oak, with an emphasis on spice, herbs and earth rather than heavy fruit. This results in wines that prioritise freshness and drinkability over density, making Spinifex a standout example of “new wave Barossa” — stylistically closer to Rhône or even Burgundy than traditional Australian Shiraz.

Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, Spinifex is one of our go-to producers for customers who say “I don’t like big Barossa Shiraz.” It’s perfect for those who want elegance, savoury character and food-friendly wines rather than bold, jammy styles. A great bridge for Burgundy or Rhône drinkers exploring Australian wine.
