The 2024 Rusden Chookshed Zinfandel is a rich and expressive Barossa Valley Zinfandel crafted from vines originally grafted in the 1970s beside the family's iconic chook shed in Vine Vale. Aged for 36 months in seasoned French oak, this wine combines old-vine concentration with the bold personality that has made Rusden's Zinfandel a cult favourite. The nose is complex and inviting, revealing aromas of liquorice, cedar, dark berries and baking spice, with hints of orange peel and dark chocolate.
On the palate, it is full-bodied with generous flavours of blackberry, black cherry and ripe plum layered with notes of chocolate, sweet spice and subtle oak. Fine, velvety tannins and balanced acidity provide structure without overwhelming the fruit, leading to a long, smooth finish with lingering spice and cocoa. While approachable now with decanting, this Zinfandel has the depth and balance to reward cellaring over the next 8–12 years.
Ben's Recommendation: At Wine More Cellars, this is an outstanding choice for customers who enjoy bold, full-flavoured reds with rich fruit, warming spice and impressive depth. Pair it with slow-cooked beef ribs, barbecued brisket, smoky pork ribs, spicy sausages or mature cheddar. Decant for around an hour before serving to reveal its layered complexity, or cellar confidently as the wine develops even greater richness and character.
