ZINFANDEL
Zinfandel is one of California's most iconic grape varieties, celebrated for producing rich, expressive red wines bursting with ripe fruit, spice, and remarkable personality. Although long associated with California, DNA research has confirmed that Zinfandel is genetically identical to Croatia's Crljenak Kaštelanski and closely related to Italy's Primitivo. Over more than 150 years, however, Zinfandel has become deeply woven into California's winemaking heritage and remains one of the state's signature varieties.
The finest Zinfandel vineyards are found across California, particularly in Sonoma County, Napa Valley, Lodi, Paso Robles, Dry Creek Valley, Amador County, and Mendocino. Many of the state's most celebrated wines come from historic "Old Vine" vineyards, where vines often exceed 50 to 100 years of age. These mature vineyards naturally produce lower yields, resulting in wines with greater concentration, complexity, and depth of flavour while preserving the unique character of each site.
Zinfandel is renowned for its generous fruit profile and full-bodied style. Typical aromas include blackberry, raspberry, black cherry, plum, blueberry, cracked black pepper, liquorice, cinnamon, clove, vanilla, cocoa, and sweet baking spices. Depending on the region and winemaking approach, the wines can range from vibrant and fruit-forward to deeply concentrated, powerful expressions with firm tannins and excellent ageing potential. Higher alcohol levels are common, contributing to the variety's rich texture and generous mouthfeel.
The grape is exceptionally versatile in the vineyard and winery. While best known as a robust red wine, Zinfandel is also used to produce the popular White Zinfandel rosé style, though premium producers increasingly focus on dry, single-vineyard, and Old Vine bottlings that showcase vineyard character rather than sweetness. Careful oak maturation and restrained winemaking allow the best examples to balance richness with freshness and structure.
Today, Zinfandel is regarded as one of the world's most distinctive red wine varieties and remains a flagship of Californian viticulture. From approachable everyday wines to highly sought-after Old Vine releases, it offers exceptional diversity, bold flavours, and outstanding food-pairing versatility with grilled meats, barbecue, slow-cooked dishes, mature cheeses, and spicy cuisine.
