The 2024 Blank Canvas Grüner Veltliner Axehouse Vineyard is the debut release from a remarkable one-hectare vineyard in Marlborough’s Omaka Valley. Home to some of New Zealand’s oldest Grüner Veltliner vines, the site is meticulously farmed by Jonathan and Robyn Falloon on clay-loam soils that deliver both concentration and freshness. Crafted by Matt Thomson and Sophie Parker-Thomson MW, the wine showcases the variety’s Austrian heritage while embracing Marlborough’s vibrant fruit expression and precision.
The nose reveals yuzu, grapefruit, pear and lime blossom alongside notes of white pepper, fennel seed and wet stone. Richly textured yet vibrant, the palate combines citrus and orchard fruit with savoury complexity, fine phenolic grip and a chalky mineral finish. Cameron Douglas MS awarded the wine 93 points, praising its power, texture and energy, while early reviews have highlighted its concentration, freshness and impressive length.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A brilliant cool-climate Grüner Veltliner that offers something a little different for adventurous white wine drinkers. Textural, spicy and highly food-friendly, it pairs beautifully with schnitzel, roast pork, grilled fish, Asian-inspired dishes and roast chicken. Enjoy now for its youthful vibrancy or cellar through 2030–2032 as it develops additional savoury complexity.
