A benchmark Australian Sangiovese from Bryan Martin’s estate vineyard in Murrumbateman, made from mature Brunello clones and matured slowly in concrete and large-format foudre. The 2023 vintage is elegant, savoury and finely structured, showing the refinement that has made this one of Australia’s leading examples of the variety. The nose shows black cherry, blood plum and cranberry alongside dried herbs, tea leaf, spice and subtle floral notes. There’s a savoury earthy edge and fine perfume that gives the wine plenty of complexity and lift.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied with bright acidity, fine persistent tannins and vibrant red fruit carrying through the finish. Tense, energetic and beautifully food friendly, with a long savoury finish and excellent balance between freshness and structure.
Ben’s Recommendation:
One of the benchmark Sangioveses in Australia — vibrant, savoury and beautifully detailed without losing drinkability. More refined and acid-driven than richer Italian-style examples, making it brilliant with food. Perfect with pizza, pasta ragù, chargrilled pork or antipasti. Drink now or cellar through 2035+.
