The 2023 Patrick Sullivan Black Sands Chardonnay is a distinctive single-vineyard Chardonnay from Henty in Western Victoria. The vineyard, planted in 1990 near Heywood, sits on shallow black volcanic sand and basalt over deep white limestone. Aromatically, the wine shows lemon rind, nectarine and orange blossom alongside brioche, marzipan and subtle mineral notes.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and textural, with ripe stone fruit, creamy lime and fresh acidity balanced by a chalky mineral character. The fruit was whole-cluster crushed and fermented in French oak barriques, including 30% new oak, followed by full malolactic fermentation and lees stirring for additional depth and texture.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is an excellent choice for Chardonnay drinkers who enjoy generous, textural whites with citrus freshness, mineral complexity and well-integrated oak. Enjoy now or cellar over the medium term. Ideal with grilled fish, roast chicken, scallops, creamy pasta, pork or mushroom dishes.
